Welcome to The Times of Malaya

Welcome to The Times of Malaya

Every publication begins with a conviction.

Ours is simple: Malaysia deserves writing that takes it seriously.

Not the Malaysia of press releases and viral clips, but the Malaysia of its morning markets, its contested histories, its generational tensions, its quiet neighborhoods changing faster than anyone planned. The Malaysia that is never quite captured in a headline.

We founded The Times of Malaya because we believe that the country is underwritten — not in volume, but in depth. There is no shortage of news about Malaysia. There is a shortage of writing about Malaysia: slow, considered, reported, revised.

What we will publish

We will publish long-form essays and reported features. We will publish cultural criticism and personal essays. We will publish interviews with people who are building, creating, and questioning. We will publish things that do not fit neatly into a news cycle — because those are often the things that matter most.

We will not publish quickly for the sake of publishing quickly. Every piece that appears on this site has been thought about, edited, and, where necessary, argued over. This is not a promise of perfection. It is a promise of care.

Who we write for

We write for Malaysians who are curious about their country. We write for those who have left and carry it with them. We write for those who have arrived and are trying to understand it. We write, most of all, for readers who want more than a summary.

If that sounds like you — welcome. We are glad you are here.
